VADA Defense Line September 2022

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

I begin this month with thank you!  Thank you for the honor and the privilege of serving as your President this past year.  At our Annual Meeting this October, I will hand the gavel to our President-Elect, Julie Palmer.  Julie is an exceptional lawyer and an even better friend.  With Julie at the helm as our 51st President, I can state without hesitation that we are in store for great things ahead!

Looking back over the past month, I would like to thank all those who attended our Tidewater Region Happy Hour in Norfolk on September 6!  Thank you to our sponsors, Planet Depos and Juridical Solutions.  Thank you, too, to Jonathan Hyslop, our Tidewater Regional Director, for all of your hard work in putting this event together.

We hope to see many of our Northern Virginia members at our Potomac Region Happy Hour in Tysons on Wednesday!  Well-deserved thanks to Madelaine Katz, our Potomac Regional Director, for planning the event and to Planet Depos and Berenzweig Leonard LLP for sponsoring.

Thank you to the Supreme Court of Virginia for affording me the honor of representing VADA at the investiture of Justice Wesley Russell on September 14.  To Justice Russell, I offer our congratulations!  We wish you nothing but the best as you continue your record of distinguished service to our Commonwealth and its citizens.

Turning to golf, congratulations are in order to Team VADA for bringing home the win in the 2022 VADA/VTLA Civility Golf Tournament!  A tip of the hat to Team VTLA, The McCammon Group, VADA Past President and team captain John Owen, and all others involved in the planning of this year’s Tournament.  Thank you, too, to Independence Golf Club for hosting this year's event.

Last, but certainly not least, I look forward to seeing each of you October 12-14 at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center as we gather for our 2022 Annual Meeting!  If you have not yet registered for our Annual Meeting, please do so today!  Visit the Annual Meeting page of our website for registration and complete Annual Meeting details.

To our members and friends, I wish you much good health and happiness.  Thank you again for your support this past year and for the opportunity to serve!

The term “wellness” is associated with promoting positive mental and physical health.   The legal profession is not for the weak.   Advocacy creates oppositional relationships, and while not all are combative, challenging relationships with opposing counsel can be unavoidable.   Our profession is laden with deadlines often not of our own making.  Not only do we engage with opponents, but we answer the demands of our clients and the Court.  Demands and deadlines are stressful as is the mental labor required of the work itself.  Self-care, described as the conscious acts taken to promote physical, mental and emotional health,  is an essential part of maintaining wellness, and can take many forms.  We are familiar with taking a walk, drinking plenty of water, exercise and healthy meals, all of which are effective.  Sitting in the sunlight, journalling and planning events to look forward to are also examples of self-care.  Saying “no” to additional obligations can be a powerful form of self-care.  There are times when saying no is not an option, but when it is an option, consider it, and consider saying no as a form of self-care.    Whether it be a committee, an event, or a request for assistance, sometimes the right answer is “no”, or “I am not able to help or attend right now”.   Saying no or refusing to take on additional obligations can feel awkward or irresponsible, but if the result of assuming the obligation is burn-out and stress that reaches a health-harming level, saying no or not right now, is the right choice.   Practice self-care and promote wellness by making intentional choices to enhance your mind body and soul in ways that feel good, even if it means saying no.
