VADA Defense Line
September 2024

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Happy Fall, and I want to start and end my final President’s Message with Thank You.  Serving you as President this past year has been among the highest honors of my professional life.  That said, the really hard work is done by a wonderful team that is beyond compare.

Our Board and the Executive Committee do great work keeping the sail up and the ship pointing forward.  They often serve as coaches, presenters, party planners, mentors, sounding boards and trusted friends.  The VADA is in a wonderful position under the leadership of these brilliant and conscientious people.

Our committee and section chairs and vice chairs are our next generation of leadership.  They contribute to our offerings in a significant way with journal offerings, CLE programming, and leadership of their respective groups.  The future of VADA is in good hands, particularly Lindsay Rollins our President-Elect whose term starts during our Annual Meeting.

The membership has been wonderful to work with this year and has answered every call put out to them as members of our committees, sections, and special initiatives.  Our strengths include the collaborative exchange we have on issues that arise in practice, fellowship among lawyers at every level of experience in their careers and serving the greater legal community with other bar groups.

Certainly, the VADA staff: Sherma, Amy, Molly, and Kent have made this a wonderful year.    These people do a lot to help VADA punch way above its weight.  Their experience and relationships with other professionals across the region make us better as an organization and truly benefit the VADA members and leaders.

My firm has been supportive and picked up when I have had commitments that took me out of the office.  I will not even pretend to be unbiased about the excellent lawyers and staff we have.

I’ll conclude by also thanking my family for their love and support throughout this year.  On nearly every front, I have been given far more grace than a reasonable person should ever receive.

See you in Williamsburg.

James A. Cales III

October 29 at Noon

Speakers:

Elliott M. Buckner, Cantor Grana Buckner Bucci

Our ethics rules aren’t a matter of perspective, but how and when you encounter them in your practice certainly can be.  Kate and Elliott will share some common, and some uncommon, ways the ethics rules come up in their practice, and how to navigate them, from different sides of the “v.”

The event is free for VADA members, but registration is requested here.

Stay on after our program to attend the museum's popular First Fridays program, where the museum offers free admission to the galleries, specials in the Café, access to food trucks, live music, and a cash bar, with your first drink compliments of our sponsors.
