PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
The dog days of summer are upon us! You know it’s that time of year when the
pocket parts and new Code volumes are shipped, half the office is on vacation,
and your power bill spikes because of the A/C.
This is also the time of year that many of us sat in Roanoke at the
Civic Center for two days in suits and running shoes to take the Virginia Bar
Exam, an experience so traumatic that it took a VADA Annual Meeting to lure me
back to the Star City.
Whatever your associations may be with this time of year,
get some time in the sun, on a bike, at the beach, and with friends and family
to enjoy the warm weather. After all,
“Winter is coming.”
Our CLE programming takes a respite in summer, but we are
set to rally in the Fall. Our Annual
Meeting team has been hard at work on the agenda and programming for October 23-25 at Kings
Mill in Williamsburg. I am excited to let you know that registration is now open, and you can also book your hotel, on the Annual Meeting website.
Please also accept the invitation of the Blue Ridge Region
members to join them at their Regional Event.
On September 8, 2024, in Crozet, Virginia, there will be a Polo event at
King Family Vineyards. This promises to
be a great event, so please register now on from the event website.
Two days later, on September 10, 2024, we will host our
Annual Paralegal Seminar. It will be
held virtually and is a wonderful resource for new paralegals and a great
refresher course for those with more experience. We have an excellent faculty lined up, so
head to the Seminar website to register your staff members now.
Enjoy the rest of Summer, Labor Day will be here before we
know it. James A. Cales III VADA President 2023-24

Journal of Civil Litigation Summer 2024 Edition
Do not miss the Summer 2024 edition of The Journal of Civil Litigation! It includes 14 judicial opinions and two feature articles:
- Gary A. Bryant explores the public meeting requirements under Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), offering a thorough guide for public bodies that participate in such meetings.

Many thanks to Managing Editor, Molly Terry; Editor-in-Chief, Kent Sinclair; the Board of Editors; and Chair of the Board of Editors, John D. Eure for consistently producing such a quality journal.
