VADA Defense Line January 2019

Welcome

Happy New Year from VADA. I am excited to lead VADA as we head into our 51st year of putting value into practice. We remain committed to promoting justice, professionalism and integrity in our civil justice system. 2019 brings many changes to VADA, including an exciting new website and membership system, which should make interacting with us easier and bring greater value to your membership. Please check it out and let us know your thoughts on the new design.

Welcome to our first Defense Line newsletter, which we will use to communicate with you about exciting news from VADA. I look forward to a successful year at VADA. Contact me at jmumford@hancockdaniel.com with your suggestions for additional improvements. Thank you for your continued support of VADA.

Legislative Update

The 2019 Virginia General Assembly convenes on January 9, 2019 and is scheduled to last 46 days and adjourn on February 26.  The VADA continues its relationship with lobbyist Alexander M. Macaulay of the law firm Macaulay & Jamerson, P.C. (“MacJam”).  MacJam will monitor General Assembly legislation which VADA deems relevant and will provide reports and analysis and actively lobby on specific legislation as directed by VADA.

On January 5, the VADA Legislative Committee met with MacJam in Richmond to review pre-filed bills and discuss the forecast for the 2019 session to include potential bills.  MacJam will be alert to any renewed efforts on bills pertaining to spoliation of evidence, tort reform, UIM bad faith, wrongful death beneficiaries, and other proposed bills which may be of interest to our organization. We will keep you posted on any relevant legislative developments.
